Biographical / Historical

Helen May Gilliatt was born to William Henry and Arvilla Jane (Lonnein) Gilliatt in Orange County, Indiana on July 28, 1902. She studied art in Indianapolis at the John Herron Art Institute and Butler University, as well as Indiana University, the Cape Cod School of Art, and the Art Students League. Her instructors included Clifton Wheeler, Jerry Farnsworth, William Forsyth, Charles Hawthorne, Wayman Adams, and Eliot O’Hara. Gilliatt exhibited her work in solo shows around Indiana and was a participant in many Hoosier salons, earning many prizes. She married twice--both marriages lasting 17 years. Her first husband was Arthur Woodward and the second was James Woods. Helen May Woodward taught art to preschool children out of her home in Indianapolis and painted portraits on commission including those of Governor Edgar Whitcomb, Coach Tony Hinke, and Tony Hulman. Woodward died on May 17, 1980, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
