Biographical Note

James Gavin was born on March 31, 1830, in Butler County, Ohio. His family moved to Franklin County, Indiana, near Brookville. In 1851, he married Martha E. Tucker. Prior to practicing law, Gavin was a school teacher. Around 1857, he started the law firm Gavin & Hord. The firm dissolved, however, with the outbreak of the Civil War. Gavin aided in the organization of the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served as lieutenant and adjutant of the unit. He soon became commander of the regiment and served as such until 1863 when he was forced to resign his commission due to injuries sustained at the second battle of Bull Run. Gavin was elected clerk of Decatur County, but resigned in 1864 to take command of the 134th Indiana Volunteers. He resumed his office after completing his service and held the post until 1867. Gavin then resumed his law practice with the firm Gavin & Miller. He died on July 4, 1873, leaving a widow and three children, Frank E., William J, and Addie M. Gavin.
