Scope and Contents

This collection includes two copies of Golda Clay Walter's historical sketch, "Wakarusa, Indiana Was 100 Years Old in 1952". Written circa 1952, Walter's sketch is a nine page typewritten article that relates the early history of Olive Township and the establishment of Wakarusa. The article mentions early settlers, local businesses and town physicians, and also relates "the one outstanding tragical event of the Town", a fire that occurred on October 29, 1899 and burned down the south east corner of the town.

Biographical Note

Golda Clay Walter was born on February 6, 1890 in Wakarusa, Indiana to William and Nora Clay. She married Ralph Walter on May 7, 1913 and they operated the Walter Lumber Company. A lifelong resident of Wakarusa, she was a member of the local Methodist Church and a charter member of the Searchlight Club. She passed away at the age of 84 on August 4, 1974.
