Biographical Note

Richard L. Phipps was born on March 27, 1843, in Marion County, Indiana. He grew up in Indiana and in 1864, he joined Company K, 142nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a privat Phipps rose to the rank of corporal and sustained a debilitating gunshot wound to his left hand at the Battle of Nashville, for which he would receive a military pension. He mustered out at the end of the war and married Mary Jane Youkley in 1866. The couple moved to Houston, Texas County, Missouri by 1870 where Phipps worked as a farmer. Phipps died on November 28, 1901 in Houston, Missouri and is buried in Pine Lawn Cemetery there.
