Scope and Contents

The collection includes two photostats presented by Mrs. William A. Wilson on September 20, 1826 in Jasper, Indiana on the 100th anniversary of the First Indiana Presbytery. The document covers the proceedings of the Indiana Presbytery from 1826 to 1844. In addition, it reviews the origin of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Tennessee and Kentucky and concludes with a letter from Reverend W.E. Gray from 1924.

Historical Note

Established in 1825, the Indiana Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church held its first meeting at Portersville, in Dubois County, on April 28, 1825.

Hiram A. Walker served the Shiloh Church from his residence at Portersville in the 1820s, circuit riding over all of the Indiana Presbytery at the same time. Morgan Presbytery was organized at the residence of Thomas Coplin in Orange County on April 5, 1844; However, its only congregation outside Dubois County was in Bloomfield.
