Historical Note

Jean B. LaGruness, of Michilimackinac, made an application for permission to trade with the Winnebago Indians. William Henry Harrison, Governor of the Indiana Territory and Superintendent of Indian Affairs, granted a license to LaGruness for trade with the Winnebago Nation by the Rock River. The license included selling goods, wares, and merchandise in accordance with laws and regulations. One condition was LaGruness or any of his associates could not sell liquor to the Indians.
