Historical Note
Archibald Kennedy and his sons, Emmett L. and Charles F., were covered bridge builders from Rush County, Indiana. Their covered bridges were known for their craftsmanship and the rounded archways and ornamental scrollwork on the gable ends were characteristic of their work. Most of their bridges were single span and were built with the Burr Arch Truss. In 1881, their first bridge to include covered walkways was built over the Flat Rock River on what is now State Road 44 about a mile east of Rushville. In 1934, drawings of the bridge were completed by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), a federal preservation program of the National Park Service that was begun in 1933 to document America's architectural heritage. The bridge was removed in 1940 to make way for a more modern structure.
