Scope and Contents
This collection contains photostatic copies of documents from the Sparta Township Detective Association of Noble County, Indiana ranging from 1884 to 1912 and undated. The documents include the group's articles of association, oaths, applications for membership, testimonies and articles of investigation, and records of sales and purchases of stock. A major component of the collection is the meeting minutes of the association and an extended series of written testimonies and accounts of livestock that were created to answer the question of whether or not Ira Smally had stolen some sheep. Other items in the collection include copies of the constitution and bylaws of the Jefferson Township Detective Association of Noble County sent with a October 21, 1890 letter from John H. Halferty and copies of a March 12, 1912 letter and circular from the Elkhart Business College.

Biographical / Historical
The Sparta Township Detective Association of Noble County, Indiana was organized in 1884 under Chapter 24, Article 3, of the Revised Statutes of the state of Indiana, governing corporations and associations. The statute authorized citizens to form a company of no less than 10 people for the "purpose of detecting and apprehending horse thieves and other felons, and for mutual protection and indemnity against the acts of such horse thieves and felons."
