Biographical Note

John DePauw was a pioneer lawyer and judge in Washington County. He was also part of the first Indiana Constitutional Convention and was elected to the Indiana Senate for 4 terms until his death in 1838.

Biographical Note

Christopher ("Old Kit") Harrison was born in Cambridge, Maryland in 1775 to Robert Harrison and his wife, formerly of England. He graduated from St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland and then worked for William Patterson, a merchant in Baltimore, Maryland as his confidential clerk. When he inherited slaves from his father, he freed them all and never owned another slave. By 1809, he had moved to Jefferson County, IN. In 1815, he sold his land to George Logan. He partnered with Jonathan Lyons in a retail establishment in Salem, IN for many years. He was elected the first Lieutenant Governor of Indiana, 1816-1818. He believed he should serve as Acting Governor when then Governor Jennings accepted an appointment by the federal government to act as commissioner in negotiating the purchase of land in the central part of Indiana from the Native Americans. The governor was able to convince the legislature otherwise and Harrison resigned midterm. In 1823, the legislature appointed him a commissioner to survey and lay off Indianapolis. IN 1824, following his success in this venture, he was appointed by the legislature to open a canal around the falls of Ohio. IN 1830, he left Salem and moved to a farm a few miles away until 1834, when he returned to his native state of Maryland, where he lived with his sister for years. In Indiana and Maryland, he was beloved by children and gave them flowers and fruit, which he grew. He never married. He died in 1863 in Maryland.
