Biographical / Historical
In the spring of 1886, Indiana businessmen A.Y. Comstock and D.C. Spraker organized the Kokomo Natural Gas and Oil Company and held a subscription drive to raise capital to drill for natural gas. On October 6, they struck gas near Wild Cat Creek and Kokomo became one of the gas boom towns of East Central Indiana. On October 25th, the Kokomo City Council enacted an ordinance granting the company and its successors a perpetual franchise to sell and distribute gas in the city. Kokomo, along with other communities in Indiana’s gas belt, experienced a rapid growth in industry, commerce, and population. This led to a depletion of the natural gas supply and the gas boom came to an abrupt end in 1901. The Kokomo Natural Gas and Oil Company transferred all its property and rights to the Indiana Natural Gas and Oil Company on June 4, 1917.
