Scope and Contents

This collection contains an assortment of approximately 415 items collected by Frank K. Sawyer in Indianapolis, Indiana ranging from 1854 to 1905, including correspondence, advertisements, flyers, brochures, bills, accounts, receipts, financial statements, invoices, and notes. Some receipts are handwritten on scraps of paper, while others are making use of printed business forms which display distinctive letterheads. Most of these receipts are mounted to the pages of a scrapbook and are often mounted in cascading layers.

Many business enterprises and businesspeople included in the collection are listed as follows: Henry Allen, livery and sale stable; Samuel Raymond, horse shoeing; American Express; United States Express Company; A. G. Willard and Company, pianos, organs, melodeons; Indianapolis Institute, a school; Spiegel, Thoms and Company, furniture; Dessar and Brothers, tailors; Chase, Ludington, and Cady, boots and shoes; Louis M. Wilcox, coffee, teas, spices; Ripley and Gates, staple and fine groceries; Crabill Brothers, staple and fine groceries; The Indianapolis Gas Company; The Consumers' Gas Trust Company; Indianapolis Gas-Light and Coke Company; Drs. Burkham and W. Eggert; Indianapolis Branch of the Indiana Bank Company; and Homer A. Goth, plumber and gas fitter. There is also a flyer for preachers Moody and Sankey and their meetings, signed by D. L. Moody.

Organizational History

Frank K. Sawyer was born to John S. and Martha M. Sawyer in 1872. Sawyer managed an insurance agency at 128 East Market Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. His agency offered insurance related to the protection of property. John. S. Sawyer was employed as his bookkeeper. Frank Sawyer died in 1939 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

The Sawyer family operated an earlier business as well, namely Sawyer and Co. of Piqua, Ohio, a wholesale and retail grocery business, which was operating into the 1860s.
