The collection includes Otis Shepardon's land and business documents from Vermont and LaGrange County (1819-1843); letters of Pliny and Lorenzo Dow Shepardson from Washington and Oregon (1855-1872); Samuel Shepardson's Civil War letters from Kentucky and Tennessee (1861-1864); Elijah Shepardson's letters from St. Louis (1867-1893); Susan Freligh's letters home while visiting Washington and Oregon (1896-1897) and a printed family history.

Biographical Note

The Shepardson family included Otis Shepardson (1791-1843), a farmer in Windham County, Vermont and Mongo, LaGrange County, Indiana (1835-1843); his sons, Elijah Shepardson (1820-1897), a soldier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and a steamboat pilot and laborer in St. Louis, Missouri (1867-1893), Lorenzo Dow Shepardson (1829-1906) and Pliny Shepardson (b. 1824), farmers and miners in Oregon and Washington (1850's-1900's) and Samuel Shepardson (b. 1839), a Mongo businessman and a sergeant in the 30th Indiana Regiment (1861-1864); and his daughter, Susan Shepardson Freligh (1832-1900), a resident of Mongo.
