Scope and Contents
This collection contains two scrapbooks, with photocopied materials dating from the 1860s through the 1960s, created by James B. Maple regarding Sullivan County, Indiana.
Folder 1 comprises "Sullivan County scrapbook vol. XLII" with photocopies of typed lists (e.g. Sullivan Union, list of paid subscribers for the years 1873 and 1877); genealogical information for the Lisman, Mayfield, Hinke, Davis, Stewart, Herrod, and Harbin families; programs for concerts and other public events; receipts; and handwritten notes. Photocopies of newspaper clippings cover news of residents of Sullivan County, business affairs, historical features, obituaries, and the Merom-Sullivan County Sesquicentennial celebration. Information on the towns of Sullivan, Dugger, Carlisle, Hymera, and Merom, among others, is included. There are also copies of James B. Maples column. Some materials also relate to the Rotary club.

XLIII" which includes a centennial celebration booklet of the First Presbyterian Church of Sullivan for 1957; a program for the Annual Complimentary Banquet of the Alumni Association of Sullivan Hight School in 1890; a yearbook for Sullivan High School from 1912; a booklet on the first 130 years of the First Methodist Church of Spencer, Indiana; the Sullivan County Medical Society yearbook for 1952; a 1958 guide for visitors to Merom Institute; a program for The Sullivan Centurama of 1953; and a program for Sullivan’s Centennial Celebration, September 12-19, 1953.

Biographical Note
James Brian Maple was born on March 28, 1879 to Walter Scott and Mary Bauman (Hinkle) Maple in Sullivan, Indiana. He attended Union Christian College, graduating in 1898, before attending Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, graduating in 1902. Rush worked as a nurse to get himself through college and medical school. He then moved to Sullivan, Indiana, where he practiced medicine as until he retired in 1963.
Maple married Margaret Ann Kelly on July 18, 1903 in Sullivan, Indiana and they had two children who survived to adulthood: Mary Frances and Margaret Eleanor. Margaret Maple died in 1909 at age 26 and James B. Maple married Josephine Esther Rettich. They had a daughter, Josephine Louise. Maple served during World War I, working in three different hospitals around the United States until 1919, when he returned to Sullivan.
Maple served as secretary and president of the Sullivan County Medical Society. He also served two terms as councilor for the Indiana State Medical Society. Additionally, Maple was a member of the editorial board of the Indiana State Medical Journal and worked as a state necrologist. Maple was the author of A Medical History of Sullivan County . In 1955 he was named Physician of the Year by the Indiana State Medical Association. For eleven years, he was a member of the Shelburn School Board and held a similar position at Sullivan for one year. Maple was also one of the organizers and the first president of the Indiana State Gladiolus Society, as well as a member of the board of governors of the national society. James B. Maple died on November 2, 1970 and is buried in Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan.
