Scope and Contents

The collection includes two letters sent by Welch to Jane Moulton of Cicero, New York in 1861 and 1862 from campsin Virginia and Tennessee. Welch describes saving a wounded man, daily life in camp, and the Fourth of July commemoration in 1862 in camp. Also included are envelopes and a newsclipping.

Biographical Note

George Welch mustered into the 15th Indiana Infantry, Company H, from Jasper County on June 14, 1861. He was appointed First Sergeant by the time he was transferred to the 17th Indiana Infantry, Company F in 1864. He mustered out on August 8, 1965 at the rank of Sergeant Major.
