Biographical / Historical

In December 1816 the United States Congress granted statehood to Indiana and donated four sections of land for the establishment of a new state capital. In January of 1921 the Indiana Legislature approved a site for the new state capital and named it Indianapolis. The original city plat was one square mile with a half-mile border around the square made up of “out-lots." Initially an Agent of State was tasked with the selling of lots but the duty was later transferred to the Secretary of State. The out-lots were mostly farm land until after 1847 when they were quickly absorbed into the city. Out-lot 12 of Block 147 was located east of the White River at the corner of Washington and Blackford Street.
