Biographical / Historical

In January 1821 the Indiana Legislature approved a site on the east bank of the White River at the mouth of Fall Creek for the location of a new state capital and named it “Indianapolis.” The state government was trasferred from Corydon to Indianapolis at the end of 1824, but the town grew slowly, with a population of only about 2,700 in 1840. Benjamin Pottage, an immigrant from England, was one of the early business men of the capital. He opened a hardware store around 1835 and is listed in the report by the Treasure of the State regarding "the payments on account of State House and incidental expenses of the last General Assembly during the financial year of 1840."
