This collection includes the initiation register for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge No. 169 of Oxford, Indiana containing entries ranging from 1857 to 1928 and three additional entries from 1949. The collection also includes a four page typewritten list of members initiated into the lodge from 1857 to 1900, listed alphabetically along with their age, occupation and year of initiation.

Biographical / Historical

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) is a non-political and non-sectarian fraternal organization. First organized in England in the 18th century, American Odd Fellowship was founded on April 26, 1819 in Baltimore, Maryland by Thomas Wildey. The historic command of the fraternal group is to "visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan." I.O.O.F., Lodge No. 169 was instituted in Oxford, Indiana on September 30, 1855 with five charter members.
