Identifier: S2656
Scope and Contents
This collection includes a June 8, 1839 letter written by Pastor Peter Chabert and sent from Vincennes, Indiana to Ferdinand Bernhard at St. Marie, Jasper County, Illinois. In the letter Chabert requests assistance in obtaining a new horse to travel to St. Marie and mentions that "our good Bishop" is rather worse. This is most likely in reference to Simon Bruté, the first bishop of the Diocese of Vincennes, Ind., who passed away on June 26, 1839.

Biographical / Historical
The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (C.Ss.R. - from the Latin: Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris), commonly known as the Redemptorists, is a community of Roman Catholic priests and lay brothers founded by St. Alphonsus Liguori in a small town near Naples, Italy in 1732. The community's focus was preaching the word of God, especially to the poor, through parish missions and retreats. The Redemptorists came to the United States in 1832, with a special interest in taking care of German Catholic immigrants. Peter Chabert, author of the letter in this collection, signed his letter with the initials C.Ss.R. under his name.
