Scope and Contents

This collection includes two handwritten documents. One is a brief biographical note on Isaac Roach, including his rank in the U.S. army and his job as the mayor of Philadelphia. The second document is a letter from Isaac Roach to George C. Snyder while Roach was still in the army and stationed at Governor's Island.

Biographical Note

Isaac Roach was born in 1786 and served during the War of 1812 as a major in the United States Army until he retired in 1824. In 1838, he was elected mayor of Philadelphia and served in a variety of government offices, including the Board of Health and the United States Mint, until his death on December 30, 1848 at the age of 63.
