This collection contains a photocopy of a poem called “Shiloh” by Peter Michels. Written and printed sometime after he moved to New Castle, Indiana (circa 1880s-1920s), Michel’s poem has ten stanzas and relates events that took place during the Battle of Shiloh on April 6 and 7, 1862 as remembered by “one who was in that battle two days and was not 17 years old.”

Biographical / Historical
Peter Michels (sometimes spelled Michaels) was born on May 19, 1845 in Coblenz (Koblenz) Germany. He served with Company K, 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He mustered in on November 20, 1861 as a private and mustered out at Vicksburg on September 11, 1865 as a sergeant. Following the war, he moved to New Castle, Henry County, Indiana. He married twice and had several children. He passed away at the age of 84 years old on February 4, 1930.
