Biographical Note
Graham Newell Fitch was born on December 5, 1809, to Frederick (1784-1850) and Polly (Capen) Fitch in Le Roy, New York. He studied medicine and surgery in Fairfield, New York and settled in Logansport, Indiana, in 1834 and began his practice. Fitch married Harriet Valerie Satterlee (1809-1881) in 1832 and they had at least three children: Henry Satterlee (1834-1871), Martha (1836-1906), Anna Emma (1838-1896), and possibly Henry Alford (1846-1926), according to the 1860 U.S. census.
Fitch was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives, serving from 1836 to 1839; the U.S. House of Representatives (1849-1853); the United States Senate (1857-1861). Fitch was a professor at Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois (1844-1848) and at the Indianapolis Medical College (1878-1883). He served during the Civil War as colonel of the 46th Indiana Regiment during 1861-1862. He mustered out on August 6, 1862 and practiced medicine in Logansport until he died on November 29, 1892. Fitch is bured at Mount Hope Cemetery in Logansport.
