Historical Note
The Siege of Corinth took place from April 29th to May 30th, 1862, when the Union and Confederate armies fought over possession of the city of Corinth, Mississippi. Corinth was the site of an intersection between two major railroads of the time, the Memphis and Charleston Railroad and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, making it an important transportation hub for both armies. Union army forces led by Major General Henry Halleck shelled Confederate earthwork fortifications commanded by General P.G.T. Beauregard and forced Confederate troops to contend with dwindling supplies, contaminated water, and disease. On May 29th, the Confederates were forced to begin retreating from the city and the Union took control of Corinth on May 30th.
