Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopies of George Pence's daybook entries from August 1921 and undated. The entries are in regard to various laws concerning voting, elections, and establishment of organizations in various Indiana towns from 1848 to 1852. Also included are photocopies of an undated daybook that Pence wrote down notes from the November 25,1870- November 9, 1877 Bartholomew Democrat regarding various subjects such as election returns and news about local residents and businesses.

Biographical Note
George Pence was born on March 15, 1852 at Columbus, Indiana to David and Nancy Pence, pioneer settlers of Bartholomew County. He was educated at Indiana University and Wabash College and he worked as a civil engineer for the Cincinnati and Terre Haute Railway, a county surveyor, an accountant, and as a field examiner following his appointment to the State Board of Accounts by Governor Thomas R. Marshall in 1910. He was an authority on Indiana history and for many years voluntarily worked on indexing and annotating Indiana laws. His specialty was school funding and Indiana lands.
He married Mary Ella Billings (1851-1894) on October 15, 1874 and they had 3 sons: George B., David and Pliny. After the death of his first wife, he married Rose Billings Orr on December 25, 1894. They had a daughter, Roseda. Mr. Pence died on September 13, 1929.
