This collection includes a typewritten transcription of a diary kept by James W. Daniels when he served with the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry during the U.S. Civil War. Ranging from September 1861 to December 1862, his entries are narratives of the movements and actions of his regiment.

Biographical Note
James Warren Daniels was born in 1838 in Marietta, Ohio to Stephen and Sophia (Warren) Daniels. The family later moved to Lawrence County, Ohio and Daniels was living in Ironton when he enlisted on September 14, 1861 with Company I, 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry during the U.S. Civil War. He was promoted to sergeant on October 5, 1861 and served with the regiment until he mustered out on October 20, 1864. Daniels and several family members moved to Indiana, including his brother Joseph J. Daniels, a well-known covered bridge builder. Daniels was engaged in business in Little Rock, Arkansas when he died of pneumonia on January 30, 1884.
