Biographical Note
John Ambrose Graham was born on January 8, 1817 in Baltimore, Maryland. He became an editor, businessman, and politician after moving to Peru, Indiana. Graham had established the Miami County Sentinel in 1848, a prominent Democratic newspaper of the area. He served as a clerk of the circuit court. Graham was elected as mayor of Peru, serving from 1882 to 1889, after holding positions as county clerk, sheriff, and city councilma. Graham wrote the Pioneer History of Peru and Miami County (1877), a local history of the settlement and pioneer life. He married Caroline Odeille Aveline on June 28, 1842 in Peru, Indiana and the couple had nine children, seven of whom survived into adulthood: Mary Jane, Richard, James, Catherine, Alice, Dora, John, Jr., Victoria, and Caroline. Graham died on May 27, 1894.
