Historical Note

In the early 1700s, the Miamis in what is now Indiana primarily occupied the St. Joseph River region in the northwest part of the state down to the Wabash River and eastward to Fort Wayne. After the War of 1812, they began to cede their lands through treaties with the United States and by 1840 all Miami lands had been ceded to the government and the remaining people had left the region.
