The item appears to have been handwritten hastily in pencil on a sheet of paper. The fragment is 8 3/4" in height and 8" in width.The top portion of the page is torn.

Transcription of fragment: "... Slavery ...and the ... would have perished beneath the weight of its own crime again[s]t humanity. And when we raise a column to perpetuate the glory of the Indiana Sold[i]ery in the war for the perpetuity of the nation, we should at lea[s]t consecrate the pedestal to the memory of our fathers who in peace made Indiana forever ['forever' is inserted in superscript by means of a caret] free."

On the reverse of the document is pencilled "Slavery ... 2"
