Scope and Contents

Four receipts, dated from the year 1834 (assuming payment of taxes within the year due) to the year 1843, make up Collection S2580. All payments are of state, county, and (in one instance perhaps) road taxes made to the County Treasurer of Wayne County, Indiana.

1841, Dec. 13. Receipt issued by Wayne County Treasurer's Office to Josiah Pugh for $2.50 for state and county taxes on 50 acres for 1841, signed by Jason Ham, County Treasurer.

1843, Dec. 26. Receipt issued by Wayne County Treasurer's Office to Josiah Pugh for $2.14 (less $0.15) for state and county taxes on 50 acres and road tax for 1843, signed by Jason Ham, County Treasurer.

Biographical Note

Josiah Pugh (1810-1866) was a taxpayer in Wayne County, Indiana, for the years 1834-1843. He married Hannah Adamson (1815-1900) in 1830 in Wayne. He is buried in Daniels Cemetery, Wabash County. In 1841 he owned 50 acres of land, valued at $300 and paid $2.50 in property, personal and poll taxes. Previous years he had paid $1.00 and $1.28. In 1843 his tax burden was $1.99
