Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two letters, both dated 1864. The first, signed by the members of the Committee, which included Eric Locke, the superintendent of the Indiana Sanitary Fair, suggests that women of the county to which the letter was addressed might have a county department in the bazaar building.

A second letter, dated September 2, 1864, reports a resolution of the Grand Lodge for Indiana Masons, which called for Masonic lodges throughout Indiana to show their benevolence to the Civil War sick and wounded.

Historical Note

The Indiana Sanitary Fair was organized in 1864 under its appointed superintendent, Major Eric Locke. Locke was also a member of the organizing committee in Marion County. The Sanitary Fair was held on the State Fair grounds in Indianapolis under the auspices of the State Board of Agriculture. The Fair was designated for the betterment of Civil War veterans and their families. Fraternal organizations and businesses, including railroad companies, contributed to the fair.
