This collection contains a recommendation letter for Alas Evans dated September 24, 1849. The letter states that Evans was a "young man of color" of good moral character and it certified that he was a "free man" who intended to travel to the western states. Biographical Note
Alas Evans was born in North Carolina around 1825-1828. He came to Indiana sometime after 1849. He married Drusilla Winburn on November 6, 1859 and they had several children: Charles E, Benjamin F., John W., Susan L, Emma (or Anna) D, Della Adell, Jessie, and Florena. He and his family lived in Noblesville and Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana. His name was variously spelled Alas, Ales, Elias, Allas, Alvis, and Aloes. He passed away on July 31, 1894 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Noblesville, Indiana.
