This collection includes the diary kept by Washington Conley during his trip to the gold fields of Colorado. The diary begins on April 9, 1860, the day Conley set out from his home in Greenfield, Indiana and ends with his last entry on August, 28, 1860 upon his return to the Midwest and his arrival at Mattoon, Illinois.

Biographical / Historical
Washington Conley was born around 1832 in Henry County, Indiana. He married Martha Morrison on October 31, 1853. They lived in Greenfield, Indiana and than moved to Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. A plasterer by trade, he passed away at the age of 46 on October 10, 1878.
