Biographical / Historical
Indiana author Jeannette Covert Nolan was born on March 31, 1896 in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana to Charles and Grace Covert. She married Val Nolan on October 4, 1917 and they had three children. Mrs. Nolan began her writing career in 1914 when she became a newspaper reporter for the Evansville Courier. Her first book was published in 1932 and over the next forty years she wrote 50 books, including 31 histories and biographies for children. She won the Indiana Authors Day Award for the most distinquished juvenile book in 1955 and 1961, was named Indiana Author of the Year in 1962, and was awarded a doctor of letters degree by Indiana University in 1967. She'd moved with her family to Indianapolis in 1933 and continued to live there until her death on October 12, 1974.
