Harry S. New collection

 Collection
Identifier: L299

Scope and Contents

The majority of the collection consists of Harry S. New’s correspondence regarding state and national politics, particularly the 1912, 1920, and 1924 presidential elections. Correspondence also includes discussion of his work as U.S. postmaster general (1923-1929). New added several notes throughout the collection (written in the early 1930s) that provide contextual background and significance of correspondence. New also provided his reminiscences of the 1896, 1908, and 1912 presidential elections; 1898 election of Albert J. Beveridge to the U.S. Senate; the 1924 Republican National Convention; and on the development of the air mail system during his term as postmaster general.

The collection also contains historical documents collected by New, including letters of Schuyler Colfax, Oliver P. Morton, and of John K. Gowdey’s correspondence to Marcus A. Hanna regarding the 1896 Presidential election.

Correspondents include George Ade, Bernard M. Baruch, Nicholas Murray Butler, Arthur Capper, Schuyler Colfax, Charles Curtis, Harry M. Daugherty, Charles G. Dawes, Edwin Denby, John K. Gowdey, Marcus A. Hanna, Warren G. Harding, Will H. Hays, Charles D. Hilles, George C. Hitt, Herbert Hoover, James M. Huff, Henry O. Johnson, Frank B. Kellogg, Robert Lansing, Henry Cabot Lodge, Andrew W. Mellon, Oliver P. Morton, John C. New, Merdith Nicholson, Bill Nye, Henry C. Payne, Elihu Root, Frederick E. Schortemeier, Leslie W. Biographical Note

Harry Stewart New, born December 31, 1858, was the son of former U.S. Treasurer and Indianapolis banker John C. New. Harry New spent most of his life associated with Republican politics, working in the Indiana State Senate, U.S. Senate, and with the Republican National Committee (chairman 1907-1908). New also served as captain in the U.S. Army during the Spanish American War (1898). In 1923, President Warren G. Harding appointed New as U.S. postmaster general. Harding’s successor, President Calvin Coolidge re-appointed New in 1925, before retiring in 1929. Harry S. New died May 9, 1937.
