Scope and Contents

This collection includes Elisha C. Beeman's diary containing entries regarding his daily activities, food, and travel while serving in the Civil War (1864-1865, undated), notes regarding Bible passages (undated), and personal account notations for purchases and work done (1869 and undated). Also included are photocopies of the diary pages, a July 6, 1864 military pass issued at Bridgeport, Alabama, three loose diary pages (circa 1864-1865), two letters sent to Elisha from his father on December 28, 1863 and February 12, 1865, two envelopes addressed to E.C. Beeman at Caro (Cairo) and New Orleans (1865), and a page of "Select Poetry" with "Memphis, Tenn., May 26, 1865" printed at the bottom of page.

Biographical / Historical

Elisha Cragun Beeman was born on August 8, 1838 in Boone County, Indiana to Aaron and Rebecca Cragun Beeman. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, first enlisting in Company G, 116th Indiana Regiment (July 1863-March 1864), then with Company E, 135 Indiana Regiment for 100 days (May 1864 to September 1864), and then with Company H, 26th Indiana Regiment (November 1864 to November 1865). Following the war, he returned to Boone County and took up farming near Whitestown. He married Catherine Lucas on March 22, 1866 and they had 10 children, two who died in infancy. Mr. Beeman passed away at the age of 81 on November 30, 1919.
