Scope and Contents

This collection includes a 31 page typewritten unofficial report on Nancy Hanks Lincoln created by Charlotte N. Baird, an administrative technician at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. The 1977 report contains biographical information about Nancy and her extended family and includes information about their lives in Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana. The last three pages contain genealogies of the Harper, Hanks, and Shipley families. Baird provides footnotes throughout her report, but it should be noted that her biography differs from more recent published accounts of Nancy Lincoln's life.

Biographical / Historical

Nancy Hanks was born on February 5, 1784 in Virginia. She met Thomas Lincoln while working as a seamstress for the Richard Berry family and they married on June 12, 1806. They spent the first ten years of their marriage in Kentucky before moving to Indiana and settling in present-day Spencer County in 1816. They were the parents of three children, including Abraham, the future President of the United States. Nancy died at the age of 35 on October 5, 1818.
