Scope and Contents

This collection includes typewritten transcriptions of letters written by James Marquis while serving with Company F, 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and sent to his mother and sister Margaret. The first letter was written April 12, 1863 at "camp on the field", the next was written December 17, 1863 from "Relleys Ford, Va." (Kelly's Ford?), and the last one on April 2, 1864 from Culpeper, Virginia. The collection also has four additional transcribed letter--two written by David Holmes from the battle field; one by James Holmes of Franklin, Indiana; and one by E. K. Hosford of Edinburg, Indiana--sent to the Marquis women in May and June of 1864 regarding James's death in battle and the reasons his body could not be recovered and sent home. The collection also includes a copy of a research work chart created by Helen Kehl regarding the Marquis family (circa 1960s).

Biographical / Historical

James G. Marquis was born on March 4, 1843 in Marion County, Indiana to William and Nancy Marquis. He mustered into Company F, 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment on September 13, 1861 during the Civil War. He was killed at the Battle of Wilderness on May 5, 1864.
