Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopies of four letters written by Elmer G. Young and sent to his family in Oakland City, Indiana while he served in the Army during World War II. The first letter was written on December 8, 1941 from Fort Knox, Kentucky following President Roosevelt's declaration of war against Japan. The other three letters were written while he served overseas: September 3, 1943 (no location given), September 4, 1943 from Northwest Africa, and October 18, 1943 from Italy.

Biographical / Historical
Elmer G. Young was born May 28, 1922 to Ethel and Charles Young and was a lifelong resident of Gibson County, Indiana. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 3, 1940 and served in North Africa and Italy during World War II. He married Eleanor R. Abbott on June 27, 1945 and they had five children. Mr. Young worked as a truck driver for the No. 2 Old Ben Coal Mine and was a a member of the United Mine Workers of America No. 4343. He passed away at the age of 64 on December 22, 1986.
