Biographical / Historical
The first issue of the Free Territory Sentinel, a Free Soil Party newspaper, was published in Centerville, Indiana on August 16, 1848 under the editorial leadership of Rawson Vaile and P. Smith. On January 9, 1850, Vaile began publishing the paper under the name Indiana True Democrat. The new name was meant to reflect the mission of the paper as not only the prohibition of slavery in the Territories, but also the advocacy of civil, religious, and political rights for all men. The last edition of the Centerville paper was printed in December 1852 and then Vaile moved the paper to Indianapolis and began printing it as the Indiana Free Democrat in January 1853. The last printing of this paper was on December 28, 1854.
