This collection comprises copies of account books kept by James Sheil for his general store in Sheilville (later named Buena Vista, then Atlanta), Hamilton County, Indiana ranging from 1855 to 1872, with notations about dry goods and grocery purchases, land transactions, rent collections, and estate settlements, including those of William Roads, John Murray, and John S. Wolff.

Biographical Note

James Sheil was born in Ireland in May, 1820 to Michael and Mary Ryan Shiel. His two brothers and three sisters were also born in Ireland, where his mother died in 1829. James Sheil immigrated to the United States, moving to Indiana where he kept general stores in Sheilville (renamed Buena Vista in 1854, then Atlanta in 1855). Sheil acted as agent for his father and others in business transactions. He died on May 5, 1907, at the age of 87, in Jackson Township, Hamilton County, Indiana.
