Scope and Contents

This daybook measures 7 3/4 inches wide by 12 1/4 inches high. Every other page is hand numbered through page 72. The first 12 pages are an index to the entries. Names are listed alphabetically on the index pages, with the corresponding entries given on the following pages. The accounts were kept from 1830 to 1831. The entries include the item purchased and the cost of same. At the back of the book are four loose items: (1) post card to D. Collins from the Greenfield Mutual Burial Association about the death of Sallie Rawlings, dated Dec. 23, 1905; (2) an account for J. Hamilton and Company, by Absolem Lines, dated August 19, 1830; (3) an unsigned order for groceries; and (4) scratch paper with calculations.

Biographical Note

T. Thurston Pattison, who kept this account book, was born on December 9, 1813, in Bracken County, Kentucky. He was the son of Edward Pattison (1777-1827) and Hester Day (1783-1873). His father died in Rush County, Indiana, on February 13, 1827, when Thurston was 13 years old. Three years later, the first entries were made in this daybook. Pattison died in Marion, Grant County, Indiana, on February 14, 1899, at the age of 85.
