John Henry Ream was born on December 10, 1838 in Shanesville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. At the age of 12, he lived in Peru, Miami County, Indiana. Ream married Charlotte "Lottie" Abbott Covell (1849-1936) on February 21, 1873 in Walker, Kent County, Michigan.
On July 10, 1863, he was enrolled as a corporal in Company C, 106th Indiana Regiment, known as the "Minute Men." The regiment travelled from Indianapolis to Cincinnati, but did not engage in a battle with the Rebels. Returning to Indianapolis, they were mustered out on July 18th.
