Biographical / Historical

Daniel Boone was an early American frontiersman and legendary folk hero. He was born in 1734 in Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania to Squire and Sarah Boone. He had little formal schooling, but he could read and write and learned wilderness skills and marksmanship at an early age. He spent much of his life as a wandering hunter and trapper and is credited with blazing a trail to the west through the Cumberland Gap. The trail became known as the Wilderness Road and it made possible the first settlements in Kentucky. He was a courageous and resourceful leader, but he never prospered financially. He died in Missouri at the age 86 on September 26, 1820.
