Biographical Note
François Riday Busseron (or Bosseron) was born in 1748 in the Northwest Territory when it was still a part of New France. He held many different roles over the course of his life: pioneer, fur trader, banker, mayor of Vincennes, Indiana (1777-1782), general store operator, and militia captain. Busseron stayed after the English took possession of the Northwest Territory then helped George Rogers Clark fight at Fort Sackville, with both men and munitions. Busseron would donate over 5,000 British pounds to the cause of the American Revolution, mostly to George Rogers Clark, and only received 300 American dollars in return, a paltry sum leaving him destitute. He died in 1791 at the age of 43.
