Biographical Note
Eva Florence MacDougall was born to Edwin and Hattie Jane (Johnson) MacDougall on July 14, 1892 in Wisconsin. She had one sister, Edwina, who also became a nurse and a brother, Lawrence (who died the year after he was born). MacDougall worked as a Latin and German teacher and then attended the 3 month nursing camp at Vassar College (the "Vassar Rainbow Division of 1918") in 1918, then went to the Bellevue School of Nursing from which she was graduated in 1920. As was true of many nurses of her generation, MacDougall never married, preferring to devote her energies to her profession.
MacDougall worked as a nurse in New York for the Red Cross, then the Visiting Nurses Association in New York City. She joined the staff of the Indiana State Board of Health in 1925 as the assistant director of the Division of Public Health Nursing, then left in 1942 as the director. MacDougall joined the Red Cross staff in 1942 and became the director of home nursing. She received the 1955 service award of the Indiana Public Health Association and retired in 1955. MacDougall died April 28, 1982 and was buried in the Heart Prairie Cemetery, Heart Prairie, Wisconsin.
