Biographical Note
Edward Tiffin was born June 19, 1766 in Carlisle, England. He studied medicine before immigrating to the United States in 1784. He settled in Charles Town, Virginia (now in West Virginia) and attended lectures at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Following his entry into the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1792, Tiffin moved to Chillicothe, Ohio in 1796 and engaged in preaching and medicine there. He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party and was elected the first governor of Ohio in 1803. Tiffin also served in both the U.S. Senate and in the Ohio House of Representatives. He served as surveyor general of the Northwest Territory from 1814 to 1829. Tiffin died in Chillicothe on August 9, 1829.
