Scope and Contents

This collection includes a photostat copy of a letter written by George Slocum and sent to his aunt Frances Slocum in care of A. E. Godfrey of Peru, Miami County, Indiana. Dated December 28, 1845, the letter was written upon his return home to Bellevue, Huron County, Ohio following his visit with his aunt in Indiana.

Biographical Note

George Remington Slocum was born on July 3, 1822 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Isaac and Elizabeth (Patrick) Slocum. He married Eliza Ophelia Pierce on January 4, 1843 at Sandusky, Ohio and they had seven children. George was the nephew of Frances Slocum, a woman who was taken captive by Delaware warriors in 1778 when she was five years old and was later adopted as a member of the Miami tribe. In November 1846, George and his family moved to Indiana and lived on a farm in Wabash County only a few miles away from where Frances lived along the banks of the Mississinewa River near Peru, Indiana. George died on January 28, 1860.
