Biographical Note

John Scott was born on May 9, 1793 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He married Jane Hoover on August 23, 1814 and they had at least five children. He was a printer and established the firm of Magee and Scott with Alexander Magee in Carlisle. In 1816, the young family moved to Brookville, Indiana and John established a printer's trade there. Scott went on to be associated with newspapers in Brookville, Richmond, and Centerville before moving to Logansport in 1829 and becoming the publisher of the Potawattimie and Miami Times. He printed this paper until August 1831, then published the paper as the Cass County Times. In 1833, Scott sold the paper to his son James and his son-in-law William J. Burns. Besides newspapers, he also published an early map of Indiana and The Indiana Gazetteer or Topographical Dictionary in 1826. Scott died at Logansport on July 15, 1838.
