Historical Note
The English Hotel and Opera House once stood on the northwest quadrant of Monument Circle in Indianapolis, Indiana. The opera house theater was built first and its interior was modeled after the New York Grand Opera House. Originally opened in 1880, the theater was renovated in 1897 by owner William H. English's son, William E. English. The hotel was built in two sections, the first constructed in 1884 and the second section added in 1896. The hotel and theater were sold in 1947 and demolished in 1948 to make way for a modern building.
