Scope and Contents

This collection includes a copy of "History of Our Local Meeting: Its Founding, Activities and Workers," a ten-page history about the Whitewater Monthly Meeting of Friends of Richmond, Indiana written by Mary P. Thorpe and dated October 6, 1916. The copy of the history in this collection was typed from a copy loaned by Willard Heiss in November 1949.

Historical Note

The Whitewater Monthly Meeting of Friends at Richmond, Indiana was established by West Branch Monthly Meeting (Miami County, Ohio) and Miami Quarterly Meeting in September 1809 and was the first Monthly Meeting of the Friends opened in Indiana. The original membership of the meeting was approximately 200 and increased to 626 members by 1813. Whitewater Monthly Meeting was reorganized in 1828 following a split among the Friends, also known as Quakers, into two seperate branches: the Orthodox and the Hicksites. Whitewater Monthly Meeting were Hicksites, the liberal branch that emphasized the role of the Inner Light in guiding individual faith and conscience.
