Scope and Contents

This collection contains a scrapbook kept by Robert C. Enos while living at the Indiana State Soldiers’ Home in Lafayette, Indiana. The scrapbook has newspaper clipping ranging from 1898 to 1907 and undated regarding a variety of topics, including the population growth of Indiana and the United States, the origin of place names, the business center of Indianapolis during the 1850s and 1860s, and the Soldiers' Home. A number of the clippings are related to the Civil War and the 11th Indiana Regiment, including a facimile of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, articles about the major battles the 11th Indiana took part in, and articles about the regiment's officers Lew Wallace, Daniel Macauley, and George F. McGinnis. The collection also includes Enos's August 30, 1864 Civil War discharge paper which is attached to the inside back cover of the scrapbook.

Biographical Note

Robert C. Enos was born April 3, 1839 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Benjamin and Jane (Evans) Enos. On August 24, 1861, he enrolled at Indianapolis as a private with Company I, 11th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the U.S. Civil War. Enos served three years with the regiment and was discharged at Harpers Ferry, Virginia on August 30, 1864. He lived in Indianapolis and was a carpenter by trade before becoming a resident of the Indiana State Soldiers’ Home (now the Indiana Veterans' Home) in Lafayette, Indiana in the late 1890s. Enos passed away at the age of 68 on February 15, 1908 and was buried in the Indiana Soldiers Home Cemetery.
